Exporting to the US? Here is what you could be inspected for

The US FDA released the list of documents that are required to be maintained by the producers who are exporting to the united states. The list can be downloaded from their website.

In 2011, the US Congress signed the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) which brought foreign suppliers under its preview. The act brought in the Foreign Suppliers Verification Program (FSVP) where the companies are required to verify that the food was manufactured as per the requirements of the US standards. As part of an inspection, the FDA will review the importer’s records to determine compliance with the FSVP regulation.

If you have effectively implemented any of the Food Safety Management Systems at your plant, these should look pretty familiar. Some of the documents on the list include records of food samples tested (date, type, reports), audit procedures, audit dates, corrective actions and the like.

To speed up the process, you can also sign up for the Voluntary Qualified Importer Program, which is a fee-based program which per-qualifies your food for entry into the US.
