RUCO: Recognizing the doers

Used oil can become hazardous if it is continuously reused and needs to be discarded safely so that it does not come back into the food chain. The best way to do that is ensure that the oil is used for a different purpose. RUCO stands for “Repurpose of Used Cooking Oil” and is an initiative by FSSAI to ensure that the used oil is discarded responsibly. In support of the initiative, we (Food Safety Works) have been working with our clients, and Eco Green Fuels to ensure that this issue is adequately addressed.  Eco Green Fuels is a recycler of used oil and converts it into bio fuel at their plant in Peenya. What better way than this, to recycle the oil, reduce our dependence on fossil fuel and also get paid for the used oil.

On 24th Feburary 2020, FSSAI Karantaka and Eco Green Fuels organized an event to felicitate their partners who recycle their used oil. It was a great moment for us to see some of our clients & partners like Elior, Greenwood High and Adiaga’s present there. Felicitation was done by the FSSAI Commissioner, Mrs. Manjushree at the function held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. We were also felicitated as an ecosystem partner for the initiative. The event covered various aspects, which included the science behind it, measuring the TPC (Total Polar Compounds) and how to extend the life of your oil by picking the right oil and frying the food at the right temperature. You can get the complete presentation here.

It was good to see the FBOs finally recognizing the need for this and taking the next step to make this happen. We can proudly say that our clients and partners have been at the forefront of this and would like to encourage everyone to do the same.
