FSSAI allows incidental presence of Kesari Dal in Pulses

On 12th Jan 2021, FSSAI published a draft of  Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction of Sales) Amendment Regulation, 2020. Below mentioned are the main changes made to the regulation

  • FSSAI has prohibited the sale of Kesari gram in any of the below mentioned forms.

(a) Kesari gram (Lathyrus sativus) and its products.

(b) Kesari dal (Lathyrus sativus) and its products.

(c) Kesari dal flour (Lathyrus sativus) and its products.

(d) A mixture of Kesari gram (Lathyrus sativus) and Bengal-gram (Cicer arietinum) or any other gram.

(e) A mixture of Kesari dal (Lathyrus sativus) and Bengal-gram dal (Cicer arietinum) or any other dal.

(f) A mixture of Kesari dal (Lathyrus sativus) flour and Bengal-gram (Cicer arietinum) flour or any other.

  • The maximum allowed limits for any incidentally occurring Khesari dal in grams/pulses shall be not more than 2% including other edible grains.

Kesari dal also known as grass pea. It grows as weed among the pulses and post harvest  separation of the kesari dal from pulses becomes difficult hence FSSAI has now decided to allow 2% kesari dal including all other edible grains in dal and pulses.
