FSSAI: Amendments in the Nomenclature of BEVO and Labelling and Display Regulation

In a direction dated 29th June 2021, FSSAI has drawn reference to three regulations 

  • FSS (Prohibition and Restriction of Sales) Third Amendment Regulation, 2021, 
  • FSS (Food Product Standards and Food Additives), Amendment Regulations, 2021 and
  • Food Safety and Standards (Labeling and Display) Amendment Regulations, 2021

In the FSS (Prohibition and Restriction of Sales) Regulation, 2011, and FSS (Food Product Standards and Food Additives Regulations), FSSAI has decided to change the nomenclature of “Multi Source Edible Vegetable Oil” to “ Multi Source Edible Oil”.

Food Safety and Standards (Labeling and Display) Amendment Regulations, 2021

Few amendments made in the regulation are 

  • In the Nutritional Information table,  saturated fat and trans fat should be given only if the total fat content is more than 0.5% in the final food and Cholesterol content should be given only for products containing fats of animal origin and when total fat is more than 0.5 %.
  • Bubble Gum is exempted from mandatory nutritional labeling.
  • Wheat based Glucose syrup including dextrose, Wheat based Maltodextins, Glucose Syrups based on Barley, Cereals used for making alcoholic distillates including ethyl alcohol are exempted from allergen labeling.
  • Allergen declaration is not required in case of oils and distilled alcoholic beverages and also when the product by itself is an allergen.
  • FSSAI has provided mandatory declarations for food articles containing Sweeteners. 
  • Every package of an admixture of edible oil should contain a declaration in bold stating “MULTI – SOURCE EDIBLE OIL” , in bold font just below the brand name.

This will be operational with effect from 17th November 2021.
