FSSAI Allows Use of Encapsulated Ferrous Sulphate for Double Fortified Salt

On 29th January 2021, FSSAI released a direction allowing the use of Encapsulated Ferrous Sulphate as one of the nutrients for double fortified salt, under Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulation, 2011.

Encapsulation is a process mainly done to prevent oxidation of Iron. It also increases the bioavailability of iron as there is reduced interactions of Fe with other food components.

Ferrous Sulphate was allowed to be used in non-encapsulated form in Iron Fortified Iodized Salt and Ferrous Fumarate in encapsulated form but due to innovative processing techniques, Encapsulated Ferrous Sulphate is now available as a source of iron.
